Top 5 Flexitarian Foods for 2023

As more meat substitutes are finding their way into the supermarkets, here we look at the top flexitarian superfoods for 2023.

Jackfruit

1. Jackfruit

Our pick for 2022, Jackfruit continues it’s rise with unabated force in 2023. We don’t see any let up in the hunger for this huge ‘meat alternative’ fruit. Even when the supermarkets are saturated with every possible Jackfruit format (ready-meals, or raw material for cooking, etc) it looks like it’s here to stay. Thing is, can they grow enough of it?

Banana Blossom

2. Banana Blossom

New kid on the block Banana Blossom is the fish alternative about to make waves in 2023. With food manufacturers still working on how best to use this ‘new’ ingredient, it’s only a matter of time before the market is ripe for the picking.

Moringa

3. Moringa

This ‘Superfood’ from the ‘Miracle Tree’ or ‘Drumstick Tree’ already commands it’s place on the High Street shelves but in Powdered format. It’s when manufacturers find a better way to use and cook the Leaves and Pods without losing most of it’s nutrients then listen out for the banging of drums in 2023.

Cassava

4. Cassava

Potato-like and grown in huge volumes across Africa and South America it’s no doubt that Cassava will again be popular in 2023 and may catch on big-time in Europe and the UK. But for us, the ‘root’ of the problem is the word Cyanide ! If eaten raw (under cooked) , or in vast quantities, there is a slim chance of Cyanide poisoning!. Less of the scaremongering and we’re assured it’s safe to eat – millions of people can’t be wrong, can they?
