Book Review: The Flexitarian Diet by Dawn Jackson Blatner

One of the defining moments that helped kick off the flexitarian movement was the publication of Dawn Jackson Blatner’s book, The Flexitarian Diet. Here we learn about the author and take a peek inside the book.

The Flexitarian Diet was introduced by dietitian Dawn Jackson Blatner in her best selling book: The Flexitarian Diet: The Mostly Vegetarian Way to Lose Weight, Be Healthier, Prevent Disease, and Add Years to Your Life.

Why Flexitarian?

Flexitarians follow a mainly plant-based diet, supplemented by a little meat. In addition to reducing the impact of meat production on the environment, research has shown that flexitarianism can be good for your health. Flexitarians may even have a lower incidence of cancer and diabetes as well as lower rate of heart disease. Many flexitarians are also driven to eat less meat because of animal welfare concerns connected with intensive farming.

The Flexitarian Diet

The aim of the book is to help people keep all the benefits of a vegetarian diet but with the bonus of eating a little meat from time to time. The author explains that there are no rules and no restrictions. Just eat more plants during your regular meals—and try to do the best you can. It’s that simple. Once you understand the basics of “FlexFoods,” you can swap your ingredients, change your dinner plans, beef up your main dishes with “meaty” alternatives, and spice up your vegetables for fully satisfying meals. The secret is “flexibility”.

Five-by-Five Flex Plan

According to the book, the flexitarian diet is not your usual ‘diet’. DJ Blatner prefers to describe this way of eating as “a smart new way of cooking, eating, and living that’s as flexible as you are”. A key feature of the book is the Five-by-Five Flex Plan—five basic five-part guidelines that can be customized to suit your taste:

  • Five Flex food groups
  • Five main-ingredient recipes
  • Five types of FlexLife troubleshooters
  • Five Flex fitness factors
  • Five-week Flex meal plan
